Chief Product Officer


Context

We have been in market for seven years, beginning as a charity, and more recently shifting to a commercial structure to raise capital to accelerate growth globally. While we have years of positive traction, we believe we are still some way off product / market fit. We have gotten this far without a full-time product owner, and now we’re launching our new brand and product into the UK (see CoGo) and looking to get to the next level to accelerate our learning and growth.

We are looking for a product leader that can paint a compelling product vision, pull together a product strategy, and most importantly:

You will drive rapid experimentation and learning to help us discover the product our users will love as quickly as possible.

This is a C-suite role, reporting into the CEO, who is based in UK. You’ll need to work closely with our new UK team, who have only just started in what will be our major market for the foreseeable. You will have three reports, a UX lead, a product manager/BA, and a potentially a lead developer, who manages 2-3 full-time devs. The bulk of your days will be spend leading the product and dev team, interfacing with our UK team, and learning from our consumers and customers.

Mission

The focus for the Chief Product Officer for the next 12 months is:

  • To get us to product / market fit as quickly as possible

  • To significantly accelerate consumer acquisition and engagement.

In short: Build a product our users love.

What is the role really about?

  • Overall ownership of the Conscious Consumers product offering

  • Leading and managing the product team of 5-6, directly managing  a UX designer, a product manager, and a lead developer, with 2-3 developers reporting to the lead developers

  • Researching and understanding our two user groups – consumers (people who register and use our app) and customers (retail businesses that pay us)

  • Accountability for quality of product management and team processes within team

  • Own the product strategy and roadmap, facilitating inputs from the market and across our organisation (particularly our CEO, sales team and marketers)

  • Work closely with CEO and rest of leadership team to develop overall business strategy

  • Embed product management disciplines and processes to drive efficient and robust product delivery

  • Working with our developers to specify the architecture’s technical requirements and ensure its supports the core product

What are we looking for?

  • Consistent track record of successfully employing best product development practice in technology teams

  • Proven success in executing user research and testing to validate early-stage propositions and features

  • Experience directing  product marketing alongside product development to drive learning and product adoption  

  • Experience developing product aimed at consumers

  • Ability to improve efficiency and effectiveness of product delivery

  • Experience of working collaboratively and managing the day­-to­-day relationship with developers

  • Proven ability to identify new customer opportunities and to work with enterprise partners and customers

  • Have succeeded developing early stage product in startup environment

  • Ability to shape, produce and deliver product management plans

  • Ability to understand the technical challenges, make educated trade­offs and be decisive

  • Ability to blend technical requirements with business requirements

What else do you need to know?

  • The successful applicant will be potentially tasked with hiring a lead developer or similar, so we are open-minded about the level of technical leadership that sits with this role versus that  role

  • Remuneration will be a base salary and meaningful participation in our Employee Share Option Programme, at a level in­line with existing leadership roles.

  • Our headquarters in Wellington has around 10 staff, with 4 people in our new UK office.

  • We're into data, and will be keen to talk to your recent references.

  • You need to work out of our Wellington office, with occasional travel to UK

  • You need to be already eligible to work here in NZ and have a work permit.
