By mid 2019, we pledge to develop a new policy that will maximise our impact in the community and in support of animal welfare.

Carbon Conscious Meridian continues to calculate and audit our carbon footprint, and we set targets for year on year reductions. We’ve adopted Cisco Jabber video conferencing to cut down on air travel and are changing our vehicle fleet to EVs.

Each year, we divert 3,000 kilograms of recyclables from landfill

Supporting Communities Across our KidsCan, Kākāpō Recovery Programme and Community Funds Meridian gives an estimated $1.5m a year to supporting NZ communities. In addition, our campaigns are specifically created to raise awareness for those we support with strong call to actions to encourage others to donate and support.

Each year, we divert 2,496 kilograms of organic waste from landfill.

Diversity Reporting Meridian reports on gender balance across the business and specifically leadership roles. We support “Girls with High Vis” to actively encourage and support women into technical fields.

Each year, we save 257 containers from potentially going to landfill.

Supporting Communities

Each year, we donate $3,000.00 to help our communities and environment.

Supporting Ecosystems Our impacts on biodiversity are mostly managed through projects funded by Meridian, designed in collaboration with local stakeholders when our consents were originally granted. We also fund additional projects over and above what is described in our resource consents.

Sustainable Forestry

We offer 4 products for sale that have been made from wood sourced from sustainable forests.

"Sustainability, ethical practice, and kindness are all values that are important to me. I love that I get to work with brands with the same ethical standards, and as part of a team that embodies openness and acceptance. Our products are awesome for our clients, without compromising the environment we all live in. They are created by companies that care, and don’t believe in mistreating suppliers or employees. When that is important to your employer, you’ve hit the jackpot as an employee as far as I’m concerned.”

— Marianna Brown, Senior Stylist

As a business owner and sustainability advocate, it made sense to me to make sure my business reflects my views and values towards sustainability.

There are a number of planet-friendly practices that we’ve implemented in our salon - and a lot of them aren’t immediately obvious. We use LED lighting. We’ve removed all of our cleaning products and replaced them with Norwex cloths. We’ve swapped out our basin taps to 100% recyclable ECOHEADS, which use 56% less water than traditional non-water saving shower heads (but provide double the water pressure).

We only use (and stock) products that are recyclable, cruelty-free, and made from a sustainable source. We pay a living wage to our professional staff, we use fair trade coffee and we support local businesses.

The initiative I’m most proud of is that we’re now recycling the foil we use in our salon. We use a lot of it, and recycling it has drastically reduced our waste. Our staff have really got behind efforts to reduce our waste and our efforts are paying off. Our weekly rubbish has reduced from an overflowing wheelie bin down to a very small bag.

Sustainability should be important to every business, just as it is to ours.
